If you follow any predictions about what the Internet of Tomorrow looks like and functions like, then you will probably hear people throwing the terms Web 3.0 the Metaverse Web 3.0 the Metaverse, but these are not the same. What seems like the more likely scenario is that tomorrows internet will be very similar to todays web, with the addition of the new elements of both web 3.0 and the metaverse -- and now that you know what these terms mean, you can move forward knowing what to expect.

While Web 3.0 is mostly about who owns and controls tomorrows internet, the metaverse is focused on how users experience tomorrows internet. The metaverse is concerned with how the internet will integrate into everyday life, while Web 2.0 is the Internet.  

While Web3 is mostly about who is going to dominate--tech giants or individuals--and rule the Internet of the future, the Metaverse is about how users are going to interact with it. Metaverse technology is the central feature in Web3 that will be built using blockchain systems and open standards, with the Metaverse being operated by a network of computers across the globe instead of one single entity. Web3 and Metaverse will be heavily dependent on blockchain technology, which is used for creating, storing, and transmitting data and digital assets securely, decentralized, without central servers.    

Web 3.0 will be built upon the decentralized blockchain protocol, without any central ownership of the content, services, or platforms. At the same time, the Metaverse is the way in which the Internet, or the Virtual World, will blend in with and integrate with our lives so seamlessly that we can interact with it. The real metaverse is going to come out of an extension of the internet and web, and large corporations have a lot of traffic and a lot of presence in their existing web properties today.

While metaverses and Web 3.0 are not the same, nor are they opposed visions for the Internet: either, both, or neither can occur, and there could be a few overlaps which may occur in the future. The technologies used to create Web3 - which include blockchains, as well as blockchain-based crypto currencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as NFTs - unique digital objects stored in the blockchain - all have enormous implications for how we use the metaverses virtual worlds to work, play, socialize, and learn. If the metaverse becomes a digital version of the real world, and web3.0 becomes a new way of monetising content and sharing data on the internet, then crypto-currency could become a key way of getting paid for the work you do, and what you produce.
